Full Description

E 212:
This midden consits primarily of shell with some fragments of animal bone. It is located on the northern shore of Rubha Ban on the fringes of an area of machair in a hollow in the exposed rock of the shore and is eroding as a result of wave action. The surviving deposit measures 5.1 x 2.2 metres and is up to 0.3 metres thick.
Interpretation: This feature is typical of coastal middens in the Western Isles, which for the most part remain undated. It is possible that such deposits date back into the Mesolithic, and one such site at Traigh na Berie is located in the immediate vicinity of the only recorded occurence of Mesolithic chipped stone tools recorded on Lewis.
