Full Description

EF 1:
no Description by Babtie Group.

E 292:
This house measures 8.1 x 5 metres, the walls are standing quite high, 1 - 2 metres (at the gable ends), and are 70 cm thick. It is situated on a platform, quite near to modern houses (30 and 50 metres apart).
Interpretation: This house clearly belongs to the settlement Balla. Its size seems to suggest rather a barn than a blackhouse, although the gable ends would indicate a blackhouse. Unfortunately no blackhouse survives in the immediate vicinity to which it could have formed an ancillary building. Probably there are remains of earlier blackhouses beneath the modern buildings. The high walls indicate a late date, probably Post Medieval.
