Full Description

E 312:
The dry stone walls of this blackhouse stand up to 1.6 metres high, but some parts are totally collapsed and covered with turf and long grass. Its dimensions are 7 x 5.5 metres, it is orientated from west to east and has an entrance in the centre of its southern long wall. The house is situated on a platform near to the coast, overlooking the bay.
Interpretation: This blackhouse probably dates to the Post Medieval. The single doorway in the centre of a long wall suggests that. On the other hand however, it is fairly small for a late blackhouse and no windows, an indicator for a later structure, were visible. That could mean, that this blackhouse was built at the transition between Medieval and Post Medieval. The enclosure E 311, is located 15 metres to the west and probably belonged to this blackhouse.
