Full Description
E 328:
This blackhouse is situated on a platform. The walls seem to have still original height, they measure 1.5 metres. This builing is orientated from north to south and consists of two seperated rooms. The bigger room measures 7.5 x 5 metres, while the smaller room measures 3.5 x 4 metres. both rooms have entrances on their eastern side, but the door for the bigger room was located on the northern half of the eastern wall (doorway 1.4 metres high), while the entrance to the small room is on the southern corner of the eastern side. Another structure lies adjacent to the bigger room (on its northern side), but the walls of this structure are collapsed and covered with turf. The structure measures 3.5 x 5 metres. An entrance is not visible.
A collapsed roof made of corrugated sheet iron, wood and turf is still visible on the two rooms.
Interpretation: This house seems to have been in use quite recently. The roof is still present, and the walls have their original height. The bigger room would have provided the living area, while the smaller room was probably a shed for sheep or a storage room. The structure to the north of the bigger room seems to belong to an earlier period of that house, because its wall have a completely different appearance. This house was probably used until the Crofting period.
