Full Description
E 332:
This blackhouse is situated on a platform very near to the coastline and is orientated from south-west to north-east. The main room measures 8 x 6 metres and has a doorway on the northern corner of its eastern wall. The walls are about 1.3 metres high and 1 metre thick, but partly collapsed and covered with turf. This main room has two ancillary structures. The bigger is located directly adjacent to the south-western short wall of the main room. It measures 5 x 6 metres and its walls stand just 40 - 50 cm high. The other structure is located on the back wall of the main room and measures 3 x 2.5 metres and its walls are also very low (40 cm). A small entrance is visible on the north-eastern wall of this structure.
Interpretation: This building dates probably to Post Medieval or even Crofting times. The quite big main room plus the ancillary structures support this date. However, one also has to take into consideration, that the two ancillary structures seem to be older than the main room, because the condition of their walls is quite bad. An explanation would be, that the main room was later reused and its walls were maintained.
