Full Description

E 346:
This blackhouse consists of one big room ( 10.5 x 5.75 metres) and a small adjacent structure at the back wall. The house is orientated from north-west to south-east and its entrance is located in the centre of its north-eastern long wall. The walls stand between 0.9 - 1.2 metres high, but are partly collapsed. The adjacent structure has much lower walls and an entrance at the south-east corner of its south-eastern short wall. This house is situated on a small platform overlooking Calvey and the Sound of Eriskay. A small valley runs between the house E 346 and E 345, which is about 55 metres to the south.
Interpretation: This blackhouse seems to date into Post Medieval times, because its size is relatively big and the entrance is located in the centre of a long wall. Furthermore, the adjacent structure at the back of the house could have been used as a storage or shelter for animals, belonging to the inhabitant of the house.
