Full Description

E 350:
This blackhouse is situated on a platform overlooking the sea and Calvey Island. The dimensions of the house are 11.5 x 7 metres and it is orientated from south-west to north-east. The main room is 8.5 metres long and 7 metres wide and has an internal division in its southern half. The walls stand up to 1.7 metres high but are at some places collapsed. They are slightly bending inwards and mortar is visible occasionally. The doorway is located in the centre of the north-western long wall. A side structure is visible at the north-eastern short wall, the walls of this structure are just 50 cm high.
Interpretation: This blackhouse probably dates to Post Medieval or Crofting times, because the height of the wall and the centrally located doorway. The use of mortar and the internal division support that date. The side structure could either have belonged to an earlier phase of this house or it was simply not used by the last inhabitants and therefore not maintained.
