Full Description
E 362:
This blackhouse is orientated from west to east and measures 9.5 x 7 metres. The walls stand up to 1.5 metres high, 80 - 90 cm thick, but are partly collapsed. On some places a mortar filling is still visible. A doorway is located in the centre of the northern long wall, as well as two windows left and right of the doorway. The house is situated on a plateau just 3 metres to the south-east of a more recent building (which is probably a re-used old blackhouse or barn, but now roofed and the walls are covered with mortar/ concrete.) Looking to the east, the open sea is visible.
The group of houses E 362, E 363 and the more recent building in the middle of those two buildings, stand just below a cliff and above a small valley, which is now quite wet and soggy.
Interpretation: This house was most likely built in Post Medieval or even Crofting times. The doorway in the centre of a long wall, along with the two windows and the use of mortar support this date.
These remains of a blackhouse were probably used until recently by the inhabitants of the building just to the south-east. This building was a cobblers home, as the typical tools were seen inside the house. Furniture, as a bed, tables, chairs, oven, are visible, along with a newspaper of April 1966. All in all a very sad sight, as the house seems to be left alone without caring about the remains inside.
