Full Description

E 366:
This blackhouse is situated on a small plateau, looking over to the eastern edge of South Uist and Calvey, and surrounded by rocks and stone outcrops (nice location, beautiful spot!). The dimensions of the house are 5 x 8 metres, it is orientated from north to south and the walls stand just 50 cm high, are up to 1 metre thick and are mostly covered with turf and long grass. An entrance can be found in the centre of its eastern long wall.
Interpretation: This house probably dates to the transition between the Medieval and Post Medieval, because the doorway is already located in the centre of a long wall like in Post Medieval houses, while the dimensions and the thickness of the wall rather suggests a Medieval date. The bad condition of the walls support the earlier date.
