Full Description
E 396:
This blackhouse is situated on a platform near to the coastline and the surrounding vegetation is long grass. This house measures 12.2 x 5 metres and is orientated from west to east. The walls stand up to 1.8 metres high, on the western short side even up to 2.2 metres. They are 90 cm thick. A doorway is located in the western half of the southern long wall, and stands 1.55 metres high. A window is visible on the same wall but on the eastern half of it. A chimney can be found in the centre of the western short wall. Another small building is situated on the same platform, adjacent to the south-east corner of the blackhouse. It measures 7 metres from west to east and 5 metres from north to south. The walls of this structure are just 1.1 metres high and partly collapsed and covered with turf. An entrance is located in the centre of the southern long wall. The cultivation area E 395 is situated 20 metres to the west of the houses.
Interpretation: This house complex seems to be contemporary because they relate to each other, even if the height of the walls differ. The smaller building was probably used as a storage room, while the family lived in the bigger house. The chimney and the window indicate a late Post Medieval or Crofting date. The location of the doorway is unusual for this period, but still possible. The cultivation area was most likely used by the inhabitants of this blackhouse.
