Full Description
E 401:
This blackhouse is situated on a faint slope overlooking Acairseid Mhor in a distance. The building measures 11.5 x 6.5 metres, has rounded corners and its walls stand up to 2.1 metres high and bend slightly inwards. It is orientated from west to east. An entrance is located in the centre of the southern long wall, its height is 2 metres. Two windows are located at the same wall, one on each side of the door. These windows have recently been blocked up. Another window is located in the back wall just opposite the doorway. Tow chimneys could also be seen one on each short wall. Mortar has been used on the inside and outside of the walls. The surrounding vegetation is short grass, the area is now used for sheep grazing. 10 metres to the south-west another house E 402 is situated and 20 metres to the south an enclosure E 403 is visible.
Interpretation: This blackhouse most likely dates to the late Post Medieval or Crofting times. The use of mortar, the location of the door and the windows as well as the chimneys are indicating that date. The enclosure E 403 was probably also used by the inhabitants of the blackhouse E 401. The small house E 402 is also likely to belong the the blackhouse E 401. It was probably used as a storage room or shelter for animals.
