Full Description

E 404:
This house measures 10.6 x 6.2 metres and is orientated from south to north. The walls stand up to 2.4 metres high and have rounded corners, the walls are slightly bending inwards. Mortar was used on the inner and outer side of the wall. A doorway is located in the centre of the eastern long wall. One window is located on each side of the door. On the western wall two more windows are located. All window frames are made of mortar and the floor of the building is made of concrete. Chimneys can be found on each short wall. This house is situated on a faint slope overlooking Acairseid Mhor. Quite near to the house the 'Stations of the Cross' are located, this site was made in the 70s by a local artist and consist of 14 painted slate plates attached to a cliff face. The houses E 405 and E 406 stand about 20 metres to the north, while the enclosure E 407 is located 15 metres to the south. A cultivation area (E410) is visible 70 metres to the west.
Interpretation: This house shows all signs of being constructed in Post Medieval or Crofting times: Windows, the location of the door, the chimneys, the use of mortar. Later the concrete floor and the window frames made of mortar were added, it was probably lived it until quite recently (until the end of the Crofting period). The cultivation area E 410 was probably used by the inhabitants of the house in Post Medieval times.
