Full Description

E 405:
This house measures 8 x 5.6 metres and is orientated from north to south. The walls stand up to 1.1 metres high, but are partly collapsed and turfed over. Inside the house a wooden cross, 2.3 metres high, was erected. Its base is secured with large stones. This house is situated on a platform overlooking Acairseid Mhor. The surrounding vegetation is long grass. 8 metres east of this house another small house (E 406) is located, and the house E 404 lies 20 metres to the south-east. The recently constructed site of the 'Stations of the Cross' can be seen 20 metres to the north.
Interpretation: This house was probably built in Medieval or early Post Medieval times, a accurate date cannot be given, because no clear signs survive. It is possible that this house was a storage room although the size would be quite big. If this house was a blackhouse it would have been rather small, but blackhouses of this size were used in Medieval times. This house has recently been re-used: a wooden cross was erected inside, this happend while the 14 'Stations of the Cross' were attached to the cliff face nearby. The cultivation area E 410, 70 metres to the west probably belonged to that house.
