Full Description

E 416:
This blackhouse is situated on a platform 25 metres above sea level and 130 metres east of the coastline. The house is overlooking the sea up to Barra. 20 metres to the south a modern but deseted house is localted. The blackhouse measures 8 x 5.6 metres and is orientated from north to south. The walls stand up to 1.8 metres high and the back wall uses a natural stone outcrop as a shelter. A doorway is located in the centre of the eastern long wall. Two windows, one on each side of the door are also visible on the eastern side. An enclosure lies directly adjacent to the house. It is attached to the house on its south-western corner. The enclosure measures 9.2 x 9.1 metres and its walls stand up to 1 metre high and are mostly turfed over.
Interpretation: This blackhouse is one of the smaller examples seen during this survey. However, it shows the signs of a Post Medieval house, e.g. the door and the windows. The adjacent enclosure obviouslt belongs to the house, it was probably used as a garden.
