Full Description

E 431:
This house is situated on a platform north-west of the headland Heisinish on the eastern side of Eriskay. The distance to the coastline is approximately 110 metres. 20 metres to the south the wall E 432 and 40 metres to the south the house E 433 are located. The house is overlooking the whole of Heisinish and the entrance of Acairseid Mhor. The house measures 10 x 5.7 metres and consists of two rooms and is orientated from north-east to south-west. The inner corners are angular. The back wall stand 1.2 - 1.5 metres high, while the front wall and the inner division wall are mostly collapsed and partly overgrown with turf. A doorway is not visible, because of the collapsed walls. Mortar was used on the inner and outer side of the wall. Further to the east of the house a huge amount of 19th and 20th century pottery and glass lies scattered (downslope).
Interpretation: This site of a house dates probably into late Post Medieval or Crofting times. The scatter of pottery suggests, that this house was lived in up until the middle of the 20th century. The walls were probably deliberately destoyed, because usually, as seen E 401 or E 404, the walls survive longer. The reason for the scattered pottery can only be guessed and is not certain. (someone died??)
