Full Description

E 432:
This site of a shieling and a scatter of stones is situated between the houses E 431 and E 433.The surrounding vegetation is short grass. The only partly surviving wall of the shieling stands up 0.3 metres and is mostly turfed over. The diameter is approximately 2 metres. Rabbits have destroyed part of the shieling.
Interpretation: The shieling probably dates from Medieval or early Post Medieval times, definitely before the house E 431 and probably before the house E 433 have been built. In Medieval times this site was probably far away from any settlement, and the shieling was only used during the summer month. It was only until later (Post Medieval) that the settlement of Acaerseid extended into the former rough sheep grazing areas. The scatter of stones could once have been a wall of unknown purpose.
