Full Description

E 434:
This dyke runs for 25 metres in a north-easterly direction, probably extending. It is the surviving part of a dyke/ fence, which was drawn on the O.S.map of Eriskay of 1970 seperating the headland Heisinish from the surrounding area. At the beginning of the dyke in the south-west it stands up to 1 metre high and is built of stones, which are partly covered with turf. After running 15 metres in a north-easterly direction, the stones are collapsed and the dyke is lower and completely turfed over.
Interpretation: This dyke was probably constructed in Medieval times, but was perhaps still used in Crofting times. It seperates the headland from the surrounding area and could probably be used for stock management.
