Full Description

Below the large blackhouse which stands on a knoll overlooking the remainder of the houses east of the stream, we found a small pit and pockets of related occupation material containing almost 250 sherds of Iron Age pottery. Most were plain body sherds, but fragments from the pit included part of a relatively elegant bowl with incised decoration. Just four pieces of flint were found with this material, including a scraper and a blade, but there was also an oval piece of pumice with a circular perforation which was proabley a float for a fishing net. All traces of the house with which this deposit was associated had been destroyed when the blackhouse was built, but the space available on the knoll suggests it would have been a round house no more than about 6m in diameter.
