Full Description

The remains of two, possibly three, small circular huts were discovered...inside the modern sheep fank. We suspected they might be earlier prehistoric, and in June 2000 we excavated one example to test this hypothesis. The hut was only 3.5m diameter overall, with an interior only 2m across. The door was on the south, and to the right as one entered there appears to have been a low 'bench' of turf. A hut this size could never have been intended for prolonged occupation, and the absence of any trace of a fire-place confirms it was probably for short seasonal use. Twelve fragments of pottery were found, but six were tiny and weathered. The other six pieces came from five different vessels, one of which may have been of neolithic date. The date of the others is uncertain, but on the basis of two of the more distinctive sherds, we favour a Pictish date rather than an earlier Iron Age one.

A127 (NF707022) Two small circular stone structures 5 m apart. A is 2.5 m external diam., the wall 0.7 m wide, with a door on the east. B is 3 m external diam., 0.7 m wide, with a door at the south-east. Both structures are very well-embedded, despite surface disturbance by sheep. They are only about 200 m from the end of Loch Obe and unlikely to be shieling huts. Possibly prehistoric round huts (see SEARCH volume 6)?
