Full Description

A125 (NF708031) The site of MacNeil's kelp factory, built c. 1832, now occupied by the Presbytery. The enclosure wall with several blocked arched gateways survives.
Branigan and Foster 2000, 16

[NB 6 fig. grid ref. only CSB 20/03/01].

The area along the southern boundary wall of this site was being redeveloped in 2018 / 2019. The southern boundary wall was recorded prior to being demolished and areas of the site underwent archaeological evaluation. Only the area adjacent to the southern wall indicated any archaeological remains. This area was subsiquently excavated ahead of development find the footings of earlier buildings. These are likely to be associated with the kelp factory and whose form may have been of lean-to type structures abutting the boundary wall. No significant archaeological finds were recovered during these works.
