Full Description

MY 78 (NL56548286) School classroom and house (modern).
Location: Cliff edge of coastal bench.
Description: A new school classroom was built in 1891 to the south of the village, at the side of the road leading to the landing place at Aneir. The building is a large single classroom built of quarried dressed stone with a large window in the south gable wall. The east wall incorporates a fireplace with chimney stack and gives space for the entrance and windows facing the sea. The roof was of stone slate from the mainland, but it now stands a roofless shell. This builing replaced the old school for boys and girls, which can still be found as a wall foundation and enclosure at the north edge of the village close to the Iron Age site MY384. Three years later in 1884 a two-storey schoolhouse wing was added facing south and butted to the west wall of the school classroom. This gave a more than modest accommodation for Mr Finlayson, the schoolteacher (Buxton 1995). To this complex was added an enclosure of square plan and a set of outside toilets, unique in the southern islands! Today the schoolhouse is kept roofed and locked and is used by the members of the Sheep Stock Company for accommodation and storage. The enclosure has been adapted, with pens and dip for working the sheep with the outside toilets turned into separate kennels for the sheepdogs (they tend to argue when housed together).
