Full Description

MY83 (NL56448279) Blackhouse.
Location: Lower coastal bench.
Description: An improved single-cell rectangular blackhouse, 12.5 x 6.75 m, situated to the west of the school facing south and out of sight of the village. Square-backed fireplaces are built into each gable wall, both positioned slightly to the south of centre, and there are south-facing windows on each side of the door set in a front wall that may have been rebuilt entirely in a more modern style. A large saddle quern was found amongst collapsed stonework from the north wall and placed on display just to the east of the doorway. The inside of the house has been recently modified by the construction of a drystone, L-shaped wall (C), most likely a sheep pen. To the west of the blackhouse is what appears to be an older subrectangular construction (B), 9 x 5.5 m, with a door to the south and a small window to the north, but no visible fireplaces. It is built at an angle to the blackhouse, but by distorting its shape manages to place the entire length of its eastern wall against the west wall of the blakhouse. Both buildings occupy a platform cut into the bank of a stream that flows west to east at their rear.
