Full Description

BY70: complex of house and barn on platform. Lower midslope. Suybrectangular blackhouse with internal compartments and a later dividing wall. A detached sub-rectangular barn stands to the east and a metalled haystack stand is sited to the north. All stand on a large stone front-revetted platform. The house is approached from the north by a track via a ramp up on to the platform.
BY70a: Balckjhouse. Sub-rectangular, 10 x 6m, improved blackhouse; drystone shell of 1m thick walls rounded at the corners and with an entrance to the north. A fireplace is built into each gable end. Internally the floor space is divided into a number of platform room bases against the south wall that are edged with stones and separated with walkways at the normal ground level. This form of internal arrangement has not been noted in the survey before, although a similar example was seen on a visit to the island of Kerrera in the Inner Hebrides. At some later date the internal area was divided by a cross wall butted to the south wall making a separate room to the east of the front entrance.
BY70b: Barn. Subrectangular, 7.3 x 5.5m, drystone single cell with 1.1m thick walls and an entrance to the south. The barn is 1.8m to the east of the blackhouse.
BY70c: Platform. Irregular area that fronts the farmstead to the road. The leading edge is a series of staggered revetted steps forming a wavy frontage. At a later date the area has been subdivided by rectangular walled enclosures that formalize the local farmyard landscape.
