Full Description
BY76: Chamber (sic) tomb. Lower midslope. BY 76 is a classic example of a megalithic chamber (sic) tomb used first as a reference point and then as a stone source in the construction of a later enclosure wall. The tomb is set on a mound of soil and rubble, possibly periglacial in nature, with two slabs of stone set on edge and parallel with each other. The largest is 1.5m long and the overall size of the existing remnant chamber may have been a 2 x 2m square, but the original chamber could have been more rectangular. The line of the field wall from the monumnet is south by south-west, pivoting at the tomb to head north. The field wall on its southern line directly from the tomb is constructed using massive slabs of over 1m in length set on edge that have obviously been dragged off the tomb. The rest of the enclosure wall is constructed of markedly smaller stones.
