Full Description

Along a stretch of south-facing shore to the south of Aird Tong, between NB 451359 and NB 458359, just beyond the southern end of a series of north-south aligned crofts, runs the remains of an old dyke, into which a series of circular hollows appear to have been set. These do not seem to feature on any OS map, and were not recorded on the Coastal Erosion Survey (Burgess & Church 1997) or the National Monuments Record (NMRS).
NB 45355 35910. East end of a row of holes cut into the dyke, 3.75m in diameter. Four occupy the end of one croft, with more further to the east. It was at first suggested that they could be foxholes for shooting ducks, but as each group seem to be contiguous with a croft, it is more likely that they may have been used as potato or seaweed clamps by individual crofters.
