Full Description
5: A settlement comprising three buildings aligned north-east to south-west with an enclosure to the south-east, is situated at the eastern corner of the site. The buildings are located on a gentle sout-west facing slope on the northern edge of a boggy area. The remains ofa track were also recorded leading up past the settlement from the west. The settlement and the track are not depicted on any of the early OS maps despite still being well preserved.
a) a sub-oval building 3 m by 5 m defined by turf and stone banks up to 1.4m wide and 0.5m high. The south-west wall incorporated a large boulder. The entrance is 1.3m wide and located at the south end of the east wall.
b) a sub-rectangular building is located 5.5m to the south-east of site 5a. It measures 5m by 8m and is defined on three sides by turf-clad stone and turf banks up to 2m wide and 0.8m high. The south-east wall is defined by low stone footings 1.2m wide and only 0.2m high. There is no clear evidence of an entrance, but it would have been located in the sout-east wall.
c) a sub-rectangular building abuts the sout-east side of building 5b. It measures 4m by 5.5m, and is defined by turf-clad stone and turf banks, 1.5m to 1.8m wide and up to 0.6m high. There is no clear indication of the position of an entrance into the building.
d) an elongated enclosure is situated to the south-east of building 5b and 5c. The enclosure is 65m long and 13m to 18m wide. It si defined by a turf clad stone and turf gank, 1.4m to 2m wide and up to 0.5m high, that runs from the nort-east corner of building 5b and terminates against the east wall of building 5c.
e) the remains of a 2m wide track can be traced westwards over a distance of some 180m. It continues out of the survey area past the north side of the settlement. The track seems to head towards a settlement named Borveben depicted on the two first OS maps. The early OS maps show a track leading up to and terminating at Borvebeg from the main road to the west. Part of this track can still be seen along the south side of Borvebeg Burn.
