Full Description

Information & three photographs from Jon MacLeod, Bragar. Cave occupation site, walled across cave mouth with a doorway, two wells inside, one with a broken stone cover, and a substantial depth of occupation deposits, perhaps over a metre.
Location not precise
MML 29.7.2002

No measured survey was carried out on this site, although a sketch was drawn, and detailed photographs were taken. This visit acted as a reconnaissance for future work on the site, enabling an informed judgement to be made as to the logistics of carrying out a survey.
The cave opening is 11m long, by 1.8m high, with the external, 3m deep platform covered with vegetation and loose stone which has fallen from the enclosing wall. The wall is 0.7m thick. Internally, from the internal wall face to the deepest part of the cave, it is 5m deep. The wall enclosing the cave stands to two courses for most of its length, rising to its full height at the door, whose lintel is supported on the western edge by the wall, and on the eastern edge is rebated into the natural rock. The wall is 0.7m thick. At the eastern end of the cave, to the right of the door entering through the wall, is a small well, gathering seep water from the wall of the cave. There is a circular hollow measuring approximately 0.75m in diameter and 0.75m deep, surrounded by flag stones, with 0.3m of water in the bottom. The western end of the cave is dry, with a natural rock shelf at the back, wide enough to lie on. There is a substantila depth of deer droppings on the cave floor, and it seems likely that there may be a depth of archaeological deposits beneath these.
