'The Comhairle nan Eilean(Western Isles Council),a single tier Local Authority, was established in 1975 in the re organisation of Scottish local goverment.Prior to 1975,the western isles were governed from the mainland (being part of Ross and Cromarty).In the local goverment reorganisation of April 1996,the council remained unchanged but altered its name to Western Isles Council(the gealic form remains the same).'(E.Dennison and R,Coleman,5).
