Aird Thunga shows two phases of settlement as depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1851, sheet 20).
The 1st phase is a township situated adjacent to the head-dyke system. Macdonald (1978) lists this township as a cleared village prior to 1844. It comprised seven unroofed buildings, eight enclosures and a head-dyke as dpicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1851, sheet 20).
A crofting township was established by the 1st edition survey and has since developed as shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1988).
