Full Description

NB14SE 12 centred on 1950 4200

A township with two main foci and occasional scattered buildings, comprising fifteen roofed, nine unroofed buildings and nine enclosures is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1853, sheet 12). In addition an extensive system of head-dykes (NB24SW 60), which may be partly associated with this township, lies to the SE.
A crofting township mostly built adjacent to the main road is shown on the current editions of the OS 1:10000 map (1974).
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 18 September 1997.

REPORT DATE: 07/02/2005
The township depicted on the 1st edition map sheet haS had later croft divisions and enclosures superimposed on them; the location of St Michaels Church (SMR.173) to the south maybe indicative of a medieval origin for this settlement.
