What may be a single roofed shieling-hut is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Island of Lewis, Ross-shire 1853, sheet 25). This site lies within a system of head-dykes (NB23SW 74). The shieling-hut is not shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10000 map (1974).
Information from RCAHMS (AKK) 29 September 1997.
REPORT DATE: 24/01/2002
It seems likely that this site developed from a single building ( as noted above) into one comprising of an additional square enclosure as depicted on the 2nd edition 6" OS map (1898). On the ground the square enclosure has possibly two structures located within it at the south east corner. Externally the enclosure has three rectangular structures adjoining it. The structure along the south west corner only has access to it from within the enclosure. The features of other structures are less clearly defined. The exterior constructionof all these features appears to have been turf while the interior faces appear stone lined.
The site is located on the lower parts of a gradual east facing slope, above a very wet and boggy area.
