Full Description

NF76SE 11 7921 6229.

(NF 7921 6229) A dun stood upon a large and somewhat circular island at the N end of Loch Mor, Baleshare. It is surrounded by a rough and evidently modern wall, but a little within, at a higher level, are traces of another, presumably the original outer wall (c. 4ft thick) of the main fort, which stood near the E end of the island, with the remains of an inner wall c. 11ft thick. Other ruins extend westwards. The causeway, in fair condition, runs from the east shore of the loch. The RCAHMS (1928) , referring to the outer modern wall, note that '... outside is a large quantity of stones, the remains of an earlier building'. No mention is made of the the 'original outer wall' noted be Beveridge.
E Beveridge 1911; RCAHMS 1928.

The remains of this dun are generally as described by E Beveridge. The outer face of the dun wall can be traced intermittently just within the modern wall: nothing can be seen of the inner face.
Surveyed at 1/2500.
Visited by OS (J T T) 31 May 1965.
REPORT DATE: 08/05/1991
