North Uist, 20th June. The DERWENT (s.s.), of London, Buck, from Danzig to London, with wheat, got on a rock at the entrance of Loch Carnan, South Uist, yesterday, where she remains fast with her bow only above water. She appears to have broken in two near the funnel, and it is feared will go to pieces the first bad weather. Part of the machinery, stores, &c., landed, and a small part of the cargo saved in a dry state, but the remainder is totally lost, and there is not much [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/68 (no. 2248).

(Classified as steamship, with cargo of wheat; date of loss cited as 19 June 1865). This vessel stranded on Glash Isle, Loch Carrnan [Carnan], South Uist. Capt. Buck. Expected wreck.
I G Whittaker 1998.

Glash Isle is not noted as such on the 1997 edition of the OS 1:50,000 map. It is possibly to be equated with the island of Gasaidh, at the mouth of the loch.
