29 October 1884, ABSTAINER, 18 yrs old, Belfast registered, wood brigantine, 195 tons, 6 crew. Master S McGiffin. Owner W. McGiffin, Carrickfergus. Departed Larn for Newcastle-Upon-Tyne carrying limestone. Wind W4. Stranded Foymeintolla [Fuam an Tolla], Scalpay, Hebrides.

ABSTAINER. Stornoway, Oct. 31, 10 40 a.m.. The vessel stranded at Scalpay, Harris, is the ABSTAINER, of Belfast, cargo limestone, for Newcastle: no further particulars: my (Lloyd's Agents) representative proceeds to spot.

ABSTAINER. Scalpay, Harris, Oct. 30. Brigantine ABSTAINER, of Belfast, from Larne for -----, struck on a sunken rock yesterday. She slipped ----- morning and drifted on to Foymeintolla Island, ---- now lies half full of water and damaging her bottom.
