Full Description

NA00SE 8002 unlocated

NLO: St Kilda [name: NF 09 99].

Stromness, 12th Feb., 10 a.m., the following message was picked up on the 8th, in the parish of Birsay, in a bottled secured to a lifebuoy, and was handed to me (Lloyd's Agent) last night:- "St Kilda, 22nd Jan., 1877. - The PETE MUBROVACKI, of Austria, 885 tons, was lost near this island on the 17th inst.: the captain and eight of the crew are in St Kilda, and have no means of getting off: provisions are scarce. The finder of this will much oblige by forwarding this letter to the Austrian consul in Glasgow. Written by J. Sands, who came to the island in summer and cannot get away." [The PETI DUBROVACKI sailed from Glasgow for New York, 11th Jan.].

Glasgow, 17th Feb., information was received yesterday that HMStr JACKAL would proceed to St Kilda with provisions and to rescue the shipwrecked crew of the Austrian vessel PETI DUBROVACHI. There has been no communication with the island since August. [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/70 (no. 4613).

(Name cited as Peti Dubrovacki, and classified as wooden barque: no cargo specified, but date of loss cited as 17 January 1877). This vessel was apparently wrecked on St Kilda. (Location cited as N57 49 W8 35, and possible alternative date as 17 January 1876).
I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet assigned to this record is essentially arbitrary, being derived from the location cited by Whittaker. The vessel evidently foundered off the island, rather than being wrecled on it as he suggests.
