Full Description

NF60SE 8010 unlocated

Greenock, 19th Feb [1859]. A letter from Stornoway received 17th Feb., states that there are four vessels ashore on the Island of Barra, besides the WILLIAM SORLIE. About 800 bags of rice have been landed from that vessel, some of it partly in a damaged state, also some of the materials of the vessel, which fills with the tide. The VIRAGO, (Liverpool trader), while on her passage to the Clyde, this week, was in collision with a schooner belonging to Fleetwood, which received slight damage. The VIRAGO was uninjured. [Record received incomplete].
NMRS, MS/829/72 (no. 9643).

The map sheet assigned to this record is arbitrary and the loss is not cited by I G Whittaker (1998). It is unclear whether the stranding occurred on the eastern (Sea of the Hebrides) or western (Atlantic) shore of the island.
