September 1874, MAGGIE HORNCASTLE, new, of St John, N.B., wooden schooner, 132 tons, 6 crew, Master J. Wilson, Owner J. Horncastle, departed Liverpool for Sydney, C. B., in ballast, foundered, supposed to have capsized and drifted ashore, total loss, 6 lives lost, wreck found at Bernera, Barra, Hebrides.

Bayherinah [Bernera], Barra, 21st Oct., a vessel was discovered today, stranded on the shore of Borve, on the West side of this island, bottom up. Fragments of the wreck have been picked up, upon which the name 'MAGGIE HORNCASTLE, of St John, N.B.' has been made out.

Bayherinah [Bernera], Barra, 23rd Oct., the vessel ashore at Borve is almost entire in hull, except the stern, toprail and stanchions: she is fast sinking in the sand: no cargo [Record received incomplete].

(No classification or cargo specified: date of loss cited as 21 October 1874). This vessel was noted ashore bottom-up at Borve, Barra.

The location and map sheet assigned to this record are essentially arbitrary. The cited location of the loss 'on the shore of Borve, on the West side of this island' suggests that the vessel stranded among the extensive dunes around NF 89 81, Borve (Borgh) being cited as the nearest settlement. The citation of Barra as a place of loss is misleading.
