Full Description

NB35NE 8028 unlocated

Stornoway, 29th Jan., the teak wood washing ashore on the West side of Lewis is supposed to form part of the cargo of the QUEEN OF THE LAKES, abandoned, 9th Dec., whilst on her voyage from Maulmain.

(See NEDA)

North Uist, 24th Jan., among the hardwood logs washed ashore here today is a log of yellow pine, marked "F.B.F." on the side, with barnacles on it.
Source: Shipping Intelligence, LL, No. 19,278, London, Saturday February 5 1876.

North Uist, 26th Jan., all the logs which have washed ashore here within the last few days are fresh, which indicates that a wreck is somewhere near the shores. Some pieces of deck planks of an old, large ship are being cast ashore with the logs.

Lerwick, 29th May, the VENUS, Goudie, has sailed for Uyeasound and other places, to collect teak logs, being part cargo of the QUEEN OF THE LAKES, abandoned 9th Dec., on her voyage from Maulmain. [Record received incomplete].

NMRS, MS/829/70 (no. 4361).

(Name cited as Queen of the Lake and classified as [full-rigged] ship, with cargo of logs: date of loss cited as January 1876). This vessel was abandoned in the Atlantic. Hardwood (teak) logs and deck plans [sic.] are recorded at Paible [Paibeil, North Uist: name centred NF 735 680] and Balranald [Baile Raghnill, North Uist: NF 726 697].
I G Whittaker 1998.

The map sheet and quasi-administrative area assigned to this record are entirely arbitrary, being derived from the location of discovery of wreckage. The parent vessel presumably foundered out in the Atlantic, beyond Scottish waters.
