Full Description

A fragment of carved whalebone was discovered in an area of dunes at Ruisgarry in 1992. Following futher examination, the fragment was identified as being part of a Viking-age whalebone plaque. The fragment is carved in the profile of a curving beast, and probably formed the upper decorated part of a plaque or smoothing board used in the pressing of pleats in cloth.
