Full Description
F17 NF 8878 7331: Remains of a building F17 were observed on the brow of a small hill 20m SE of pole 3 on its access route from the road. The low remains are badly collapsed, but give internal dimensions of 11m long by 3.1 to 3.8m wide, aligned NNE-SSW with the slope, with iindications of internal sub-divisions. It is of traditional blackhouse construction with a drystone internal stone face surviving up to a maximum of 0.454m in four courses at the northern end, and peaty wall core. Most traces of any external stone face have been obscured by spreading wall core. Surviving stonework consists of mostly smallish stones, set in flat courses at top and bottom, with some small orthostatically-set stones down the sides, except for one slab 2.25m long in east wall. There are suggestions of a doorway in the southern half of the west wall, and indication sof a small ditch, m ost obvious at the NW corner.
No structure, roofed or unroofed, is shown here on the 1st ed. OS map of 1879. This , combined with the poort state of preservation of the walls, suggests that this house had become ruinous many years before 1879.
