Full Description

B001-003, B029
Airigh an Aip, the remains of four, now demolished, concrete and timber shieling hust, lying on either side of the Pentland Road.
None of these shieling husts are shown on the OS 1st or 2nd edition maps (1849-52, 1895), but three shieling huts are shown as roofed on the current edition (1973). On the vertical aerial photographs from 1946, a single unroofed hut is shown delineating the western edge of an area of peat cutting extending westwards from Airigh an Aip, alsothough it appears to lie further north-west than those (huts) indicated on the map.
B001 NB 35081 34098
Immediately to the south of the Pentland Road, a demolished hut survives a s pile of concrete and the remnants of a corrugated iron roof. Parts of the wall footings are still in place, suggesting the building was c. 5m by 2m, aligned NW-SE. There are traces of a low bank around the footings. A short stretch of wall which would have divided the building into two halves sis visible. In the centre of the SE gable are fragments of a cast-iron stove and iron milk pails.
B002 NB 35080 34158
To the north of B001, across the road, another demolished shieling hut. Only the fireplace and hearth, of bricks and concrete, are still standing. Part of the cast iron stone is still visible within the hearth. The ouline of the building is much less obvious, although chunchs of concrete suggest a N-S wall running downslope, to the east of the hearth. An E-W wall is 2.5m south of the hearth. Fragments of the corrugated iron roof, bedspr9ings, a milk pail and shards of glass.
B003 NB 35088 34168
A drystone and turf built shieling hut, on the top of the knoll. 5m x 2m, aligned NE-SW. A single entrance in the south-east corner.
B029 NB 35211 34080
Modern shieling hut just above the Pentland Road. Iron stanchions set into concrete seem to form the corners of a building 5m x 3m. Chuncks of concrete and sheets of corrugated iron are all that remain of the rest of the structure.
