Full Description

Site is composed of isolated stone structures (no more than 3-4m in both dimensions, up to 0.5m in height) composed of large beach pebbles and stone. Midden material is scattered amongst them and is eroding from machair edge (inc. pottery, burnt bone and stone - no human bone evident). The stone structures are sitting on darker soil, which may be old ground surface (clay content?) but there appears also to be buried peat horizon. All the structures are slumped and eroding.
C. Barrowman 24.5.2006

This site is located on the edge of the beach. No structures were visible during the survey, although an alignment of upright slabs was recorded (1.5 m across, and standing up to 0.4 m). No midden was visible, but a single sherd of unglazed coarse pottery was recovered from eroding sandy deposits. They pottery is in the procession of the Western Isles Archaeology Service, and has been identified as probably dating to the Iron Age. There was no trace of any archaeological remains in the pasture behind the beach, although it is likely that the settlement extends further inland. The site appears not to be actively eroding at present, although it is likely to be vulnerable to erosion in the future.
