Shielings 2-8
the remains of a further 7 shielings can be seen dotted every 50-100m or so as you climb the banks of the stream. They are numbered consecutively with height. There are a total of four on the south bank, three on the north (including smr no. 3558), and one on an island in the middle of the strem.
Shieling 2 is only 3m x 3m externally (2m x 2m internally) and has an internal feature which could indicate that it was originally an ath, or corn drying kiln. Shieling 5 is very big by comparison, measuring 8m x 8m externally, (c. 6m x 6m internally) with two rooms of unusual L-shaped relation. The smaller room has been added at a later date than the original, howeer, and may alternatively be a small well protected garden rather than another room. There were no discernable internal features.
The other shielings show nothing remarkable, and are of a comparable size and shape to shieling 1 (smr 3558) withouth the large external footprint.
