Full Description

Site 2, Head dyke
The clear remains of a substantial dyke run to the west side of the stream which enters Loch na Cartach on its NW corner, and follow this stream all the way up into the un-named head loch which feeds the Borvebeg burn. It re-appears on the other side of this loch and follows the burn down towards Loch Borve, again on the western bank. It was not traced far past the head loch.
The dyke is typically constructed of both turf and drystone wall, or one or the other. It also utilises the cliff which forms the western edge of the gully where ever possible, and indeed disappears altogether upstream where the burn has cut a steep and narrow ravine, and reappears in the basin above. Although clearly built to provide a continuous barrier, then, this dyke become very difficult to trace as it nears Loch na Cartack, and is not visible at all for the last c. 30m beofre the stream enters the loch. This is either because silting up of the area has covered or obscured it, or alternatively because the wwater level used to be higher than it is now, and so there was no need for it.
