Full Description

Blackhouse: the remains of a farily typical blackhouse can be found next to the little stream to the northeast of the area. It has one long main room measuring 6m x 8m externally, 4m x 6m intermally, with a doorway to the NE, two 1m wide windows and a hearth and chimney in the southeast wall. The hearth still has a part of a cast iron cauldron lying in it, and the original chain and hook still present within the chimney. What at first looks like a small extnesion on the northwaest gable of the buildin galso has a hearth, and seems in fact to be the original gable end; the building apear to have been shortened to its present length. The house is of dry stone consturction but with (possibly later) mortar pointing. A possibly third phase of modification sees a small c. 3m x 3m shed made to nestle within the walls of the house, with walls of stone, brick and mortar bonding and a wood framed corrugated iron roof.
An amorphous bank arcing around the south west side of the house may be an even earlier buildin; it certainly would make little sense as a stock fence
