Full Description

S32 NG 02614 94563. Hole in machair, c. 140m x 70m, over 20m deep. Deflation hollow between sand hils, marked as disused quarry on maps, but no track is visible through the hillside for transporting the sand. From local oral tradition believed to be where a crofter, against all advice, ploughed a field in the autumn, in the 1920s or earlier. Whe the winter gales came, the whole filed and the underlying machair blew away and covered the land to the north-east, leaving a vast hollow
