Full Description

66: Kilpheder, NF 7290 1980
40m wide, 1m depth of deposits, February 1995, June 1995, beach.
Scarce pottery - Viking Age (sagged base). Shell and bone, stone walls, antler comb and comb fragment, bone pin. The buildings and midden deposits are in the southern 20m of the sand cliff exposure; the northern 20m appears to be a buried soil and thin occupation surface. First seen by James and Callum MacDonald in winter 1993/94. About 1m of it has gone in a year. The coast is eroding at this rate and 20m have gone in 20-25 years. The E-W dimensions of the site are unlikely to be more than 10-15m. RCAHMS record another site (Kilpheder 88) at Sithean Biorach, 100m to the north. This may be a separate settlement site of whicn there is no longer any trace. The same goes for Kilpheder 81.
