Full Description

Structures 3c,d,e, and f:
The fragmentary remains of these structures survive today as three unroofed structures and a largely flattened building (structure f). They are marked as being occupied on the 1895 OS map, showing that ... 3f was the original dwelling house on the croft.
Buildings 3c, d and e appear to have been ancillary structure to sf, and were retained when 3f was dismantled. This pattern of clustered ancillary structures is not a usual one in the village of Garenin, but is comparable to structures elsewhere that were cleared as early as 1739.
Structure 3c appears to have been a barn attached to 3f. The south facing cross section shows two of the blocked entrances in the south wall, and also the fragment of dismantled wall at the west end of the elevation that indicates the existence of a larger, now dismantled structure adjacent to 3c. In plan the location of 3c next to the remains of 3f indicate that 3c was subsidiary to 3f.
Internally it would appear that 3c (9m x 3m intenrally) has been reused as a dwelling with not only the two doors in the south wall being blocke dup but a small drain in the north wall also being blocked. Excavation evidence seems to substantiate this theory with the discovery of a possible central hearth.
Structures 3d and e show little indication of modification or reuse and stand to a height of only 1.2m. While it seems unlikely that this was the original wall head height, there is no evidence to indicate otherwise. Abutted to structure 3e on the south side is a kale or stack yard measuring 6m x 10m, with an entrance in its northeast corner. This yard survives as a low turf and stone dyke.
Structure 3fsurvives now as a very fragmentary structure, the existence of which was only confirmed by excavation. Very ephemeral remains may be seen at the structure's ewast end which indicate that the building originally measured 4m wide internally. It is impossible to say what the length was, based on the sivible evidence, as the western end has been interfered with during the reconstruction of structure 3.
Immediately to the south of 3f are the more fragmentary remains of a further structure. This is truncated at its west end in a similar manner to the truncation of structure 3f. It is possible it may have been a barn related to 3f.
