Full Description

Structure 4:
This building was constructed on a half croft. It is of similar size to smr 14514, and has no subsidiary buildings. Internally there is no indication of an internal partition to create a byre. At the east end is a full gable with a fireplace and flue. It is only partially collapsed and appears stable. The structure does not appear on the 1895 Ordnance Survey map, and local information indicates it was constructed during the late 1800s.
The south facing elevation shows and area where the outer wall face was removed, causing the wall core to collapse, between the door at the west end and the window at the east end of the elevation.
The size and layout is very similar to smr 14514, and based on the similarity, it is possible that this building had an internal division creating a small byre at the west end. The west facing end wall is in a very poor state of repair. Whether this is because of repeated dismantling and reconstruction for the removal of manure is not clear.
There are differences in the wall thickness throughout the structure, with the chimneyed eastern gable only 0.7m thick, while the western end wall is 0ver 1.8m thick in places. Similarly, the northern wall is up to 1m thicker than the southern wall, which may be explained by the position of the house on a slight platform at the foot of a steep slope. The thicker wall may have been built to take the wate of soil and water gathering behind it.
