Full Description

Field boundary
With the total of 23 modern field boundaries being crossed by the scheme it was decided to investigate and record one in detail (photos 12a-d) and monitor at least one other (photos 12 e-g). A distinct and typical looking example was chosen to the south of the village, near the corn kiln, on the fertile terrace to the east of the modern township. The results were recorded by photograph and drawing - fig 3. Four other examples were checked during the normal course of ditching works and were found not to be significantly different.
The 'boundary' proved to be a drain, with a bank formed by the spoil. The drain had been cut from the current level of topsoil (and hence not of great age) down into the underlying glacial clays, where it had been lined and covered using blocks and flagstones of gneiss, and was still very much in use. It was not therefore fully emptied, although it was verified in a small area that there were no underlying features.
